Miniatures

Display diorama 2

Display diorama 2

This is the second diorama I made for my display cabinet. This one sits on the top shelf of the cabinet. The center of the diorama is left clear so the light in the top of the cabinet can shine through the glass shelf onto the first diorama. Ever since I got the ruined tower mold, I wanted to make a building which had different diameters of round towers. After trying some drawings I came on the idea to make a display with the round towers. Inspiration struck me after seeing a documentary about Indian palaces. The blocks are made with Hirst Arts molds, with the exception of the statues. These are casts from Confrontation miniatures. Scott Spieker was kind enough to make a mold for me in exchange for the miniatures themselves. The molds used are the 4” circular tower mold, the ruined tower mold, the wall builder mold ( for the back wall ) . The railing comes from the Fieldstone Accessories Mold. The domes on top of the towers are clear plastic half-balls. I found several diameters in a hobby-shop, originally meant for christmas decorations. The floor and roof are foam-core. The checker-board floor was made by cutting 1 / 4 inch tiles out of cardboard with a shine coating. I wanted the floor to look like glazed tiles. The roof was covered with 1 inch cardboard tiles. Originally I planned on making the roof with Hirst Arts blocks but that meant an awful lot of cutting and sanding of tiles, so I used cardboard instead. The lights are battery-powered christmas lights. The round pillars in the towers are wooden pegs from a hardware store. I painted the walls first with a medium gray, dry-brushed with light-gray and then white. The domes where undercoated with a white primer and painted white. Normally I don't bother with a primer for painting buildings, but the paint I use doesn't stick very well on plastic. The roof-tiles where painted dark red and dry-brushed with a lighter red. I painted the stones of the arches with a light gray to make them stand out more
